Metinvest Group’s steel mills based in Mariupol committed UAH 6 million to rebuild Skhidny residential area shelled on 24 January 2015. The plants’ construction teams installed windows in nearly 1,500 apartments, repaired dozens of private houses, rebuilt two damaged schools and four kindergartens, which are now in full operation.

In February 2015, Illich Steel repaired schools No.57 and 5 as well as kindergartens No. 47 and 165. Azovstal rebuilt kindergarten No. 42 damaged by a burst wave. In cooperation with Zaporizhstal, Illich Steel and Azovstal completed construction and repair works by April 2015 in kindergarten No. 160 most affected by artillery shellfire.

About 1,000 steelmakers worked daily in Skhidny residential area. In addition to the money committed to infrastructure rebuilding efforts, the plants donated about UAH 2.2 million to people who repaired their housing on their own.

The Rinat Akhmetov Humanitarian Center “Aid+Help” provided significant assistance to the affected Mariupol residents. On the very day of the tragedy, it delivered medicines to Mariupol and provided other supplies for the wounded to the city hospitals. Also, the Center’s volunteers provided psychological support to the victims and their relatives.

Yuriy Ryzhenkov, Metinvest Group CEO:

Despite huge financial problems, our steel companies have given a helping hand to all residents who suffered from the artillery shelling. This was the principled position of SCM shareholder Rinat Akhmetov to help all affected people in need. The companies mobilized forces to eliminate the damages at Skhidny residential area.”

Vadym Boychenko, HR and social policy director, Illich Iron and Steel Works:

From the very first hours following the shelling steel workers rushed to help the residents of Mariupol. We saw that the damages were serious and hundreds of steel workers continued to help daily. Kindergartens and schools were reconstructed within a short time to ensure children and their parents could come back to normal life. The damaged apartments were repaired. We have completed the repairs of the residential area and it is back to life again.”
