Two editors-in-chief of Vechirniy Donetsk and Donbas newspapers kidnapped by gunmen

Gunmen wearing St. George ribbons have kidnapped Oleksandr Brizh, editor-in-chief of Donbas regional newspaper, and Leonid Lapa, editor-in-chief of Vechirniy Donetsk local newspaper.

They demanded that the editors cover the “DNR” “in the right way”.

Soon both journalists were released but Vechirniy Donetsk was suspended after the capture of the editorial office and the ultimatum.

On 11 July 2014, Segodnya Multimedia publishing holding jointly with Ukraine Crisis Media Center, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for Development of Ukraine and the Donetski Novyny newspaper published a special issue for the displaced from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The press run of 25,000 copies came out as part of Segodnya newspaper.

Krasnodonvuhillia’s building for installation and disassembly of mining equipment came under shelling, killing a man and injuring two women employed at Donbas Security Group holding company. The injured were taken to the central municipal hospital.

Shells damaged entrance checkpoint No.1, smashed roof of shop No.2, destroyed auxiliary rooms and the administrative building.

Five shells landed on the territory of AKHZ damaging the plant’s facilities. Several shells hit the main production technological shops and damaged partially the tar storage facility used for pitch production and high-voltage lines powering the plant.

The shift staff and Avdiivka Emergency Service worked in a coordinated manner and professionally to localize the fire and avoid casualties.

They extinguished the fire and started repairing the damaged facilities. The key objective was to restore power supply to the plant.

ASKA prepares an emergency response plan to ensure continuous performance

ASKA insurance company has devised an emergency response plan to minimise the risks related to escalation of the fighting in Donetsk Oblast and to ensure continuous services for clients. The plan is to transfer some employees from Donetsk-based HQ to Zaporizhia if the problems with communications or power shortage in the building take a long time to repair and obstruct operations.

AKHZ was implementing the plan to address the emergency caused by the shelling on 21 July 2014. The workers managed to quickly reveal and repair the damage. The relaunch of the core equipment after the emergency water and electricity shutdown was indeed the greatest achievement of coke chemical engineers.

Artillery shelling shuts down four Metinvest Group plants

Damage from heavy artillery cut the electricity transmission lines to the cities of Yenakiieve and Khartsyzsk. This led to the full shutdown of production at Yenakiieve Steel, Enakievskiy Koksohimprom and Khartsyzsk Pipe. Avdiivka Coke is still cut off from electricity.

Shelling damaged the lime calcination and refractory shops and a water treatment unit of the continuous caster in the converter shop at YeMZ. The irrigation facilities and the cooling tower casing were destroyed and electric filters of the ventilation shop damaged. Some railway sections, a front-end bucket loader and a universal track machine were damaged at the railway transportation department. Buildings and facilities of auxiliary shops (storage and utility rooms) were damaged too.

ASKA’s HQ has moved to Kyiv as the fighting intensified in Donetsk. The company has been operating in Ukraine’s capital since 21 August 2014. The Kyiv-based customer service centre located at 5, vul. Antonova manages all structural units including the Payouts Office. Accounts Department, Finance Department and archive documents moved to a Zaporizhia-based service centre. The office at 100, pr. Illicha, Donetsk currently hosts a customer service centre and an office maintenance team.

Khartsyzk Pipe operating under Metinvest Group umbrella was exposed to artillery shelling which damaged pipe welding shop No.4 and warehouse facilities. No reports of any killed or injured. Five shells (supposedly mortar shells) hit one of the most important production facilities of the plant damaging the roof and windows. None of the plant’s employees were killed or injured.

In September 2014, Media Group Ukraine set up a new structural unit, Dopomozhemo TV production. The company will cooperate closely with the Rinat Akhmetov Humanitarian Foundation and broadcast news projects to share stories of concrete people in trouble and needing help, thus addressing common humanitarian problems faced by the country.

Dopomozhemo TV helps to develop Donbas Humanitarian Needs Map

Today the Rinat Akhmetov Humanitarian Center in partnership with Media Group Ukraine-operated Dopomozhemo TV production have presented a Humanitarian Needs Map developed for Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. It is the only map providing detailed systematised information about the needs of Donbas residents for food, medicine and household goods. The document also covers the humanitarian situation in the region, in particular, the availability of utility services such as gas, electricity, communications, water as well as working hours of hospitals, schools and public transport.
